Charles and Sylvia Alva Scholarship

About this Scholarship:
Charles and Sylvia Alva have been a part of Western Oregon University and the community since 1964. Charles was initially hired at WOU as a teacher, however, before his arrival on campus he was asked to serve as chairman of the Humanities department. He served as chairman for 13 years and then taught full time in his last seven years of employment. Charles was interested in the spread of linguistics throughout the U.S. and was happy to see linguistics take such an active role in Western’s offering. Sylvia, a former physical education teacher, taught modern dance at WOU for two years and then worked in the Business Office part-time for 21 years.

Scholarship Criteria:
- Upper division student
- Focused area of study will be English linguistics

  • This includes:
    – English majors with a Linguistics concentration
    – Linguistics minors
    – Students seeking a TEFL certification
    – Humanities majors with a Linguistics focus
    – Language arts education majors (Secondary/middle-high school language arts teaching)

- Applicants with a desire to teach English in secondary schools
